Most states don't require licensure to become a diagnostic medical sonographer, but New Jersey is one that is requiring it. The most important certification for a sonographer is to become ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) certified. To do this, you must take the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) exam. In order to qualify for the exam, you must have either a two-year allied health education program as well as 12 months of full-time clinical ultrasound/vascular experience, be a graduate of an accredited DMS program or have a bachelor's degree along with 12 months of full-time clinical ultrasound/vascular experience.

Career Outlook for Sonogram Technicians in New Jersey

According to bls.gov, the diagnostic medical sonography field is expected to grow by 44 percent by 2020, primarily due to advances in technology that make sonograms preferable to more invasive procedures. This is rapid growth compared to the average for all occupations in New Jersey.
