There is no state license required, but students should attend accredited programs and obtain their certification from ARDMS to find jobs that will satisfy their career goals.

Hudson Valley Community College has a Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This program require one year, it requires a minimum of an associate degree in an allied health program.

Suny Downstate Medical Center offers a Diagnostic Medical Imaging Program for Sonography, and they know sonographers are a key part of the healthcare team. Their program is a two-year, upper division college program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree.

The Hunter Business School has an Allied Health Division for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This certificate program requires either a bachelor’s degree or an associate degree from a patient care related allied health program.

Many of these courses are 40 or 50 hours, but the bulk of the required hours are spent at various externship sites where you will all learn to apply your newly acquired skills.

You are prepared to take the credential examination from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) exam is accepted in the community of your knowledge and expertise, and employers will look at your resume for this credential.
