MRI Technician Training in Ohio

New advances in medical imaging have made MRI technicians an integral part of many medical facilities. You can take advantage of growth in this field by earning a certificate or an Associate's degree. A certificate usually takes about one year to complete; these programs are common at hospitals and community colleges. You can also choose to complete an Associate's degree; this requires two years of full-time study.

MRI technician training involves lots of heavy-duty science, so you may have to complete some prerequisite courses before beginning your radiology training. You may be expected to pass courses like Anatomy & Physiology, Human Biology, and Chemistry. Once you complete your prerequisites, you can move onto radiologic courses like Basic Radiographic Procedures, Introduction to Diagnostic Imaging, and Radiobiology.

Many courses include a practical portion that allows you to practice new skills and techniques on your school's MRI equipment. However, the most important part of your education is your clinical class. Your clinical work is typically done at the end of your degree program. You may complete up to 1,000 clinical hours at a local hospital or medical imaging center.

MRI Technician Licensing/Certifications in Ohio

To legally work as a radiologist assistant or MRI technician in Ohio, you must pursue licensure by exam or endorsement. Most students become licensed by exam; you can only get licensed via endorsement if you have a valid license in another state. Once you graduate, you can apply for your license with the Ohio Department of Health. You can either take an exam administered by the Ohio Medical Board or the exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Once you pass your exam, you can enjoy all the benefits of licensure! Your license is valid for two years. Prior to renewing your license every two years, you must complete 50 hours of continuing education.
