On the other hand, if you can devote more time, you will notice an increase in salary and employment opportunities if you acquire some type of actual degree. An associate-level degree will take about two years to earn. A bachelor’s takes more like four years.

The courses that you complete during your training program will likely include biology, chemistry, pathophysiology, anatomy, diagnostic imaging, ultrasound physics, and medical terminology. Keep in mind, if you prefer to specialize in a certain field of study, such as that of abdominal or echocardiography, you will need to enroll in a program that offers specialized courses directed toward the area you want to work in.

Sonography Technician Licensing in Indiana

In the state of Indiana, you do not need licensure on a state-level to become a sonogram technician. Most employers, however, will mandate that you acquire certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. To sit for the certification exam, you will first need to complete an accredited training program.

If you happen not to complete a training program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, you may be able to substitute the training with 12 months of clinical experience. On the downside, though, obtaining the experience will be difficult because most employers will want you to be certified before hiring you.
