The medical field is one of the fastest growing employment fields in the United States, and one of the fastest growing areas within the medical field is ultrasound technology. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the field of ultrasound technology to grow 44 percent within the next ten years, faster than the national occupational average.

Ultrasound technicians are medical professionals who are trained to administer imaging screenings in order to help identify and eventually diagnose a patient illness or injury. They are also trained to read the scanned images in order to find abnormalities. As an ultrasound technician, you will have the opportunity to choose a specialty area within the field to study. These specialty areas include abdominal sonographer, breast sonographer and gynecologic and obstetric sonographer, cardiac imaging, radiography and much more.

Some skills an ultrasound technician must possess are excellent communication skills and the ability to work with technology and computers. Communication skills are important because you will be working with other medical professionals, patients and their families on a daily basis. Having the ability to work with computers will help you learn the medical equipment on which you will be training more easily, and you will be responsible for keeping up with new advances and technology in the field.
