Receiving your Sonogram Technician Training in Oregon

For individuals who wish to begin a career as a sonogram technician, the preparation process begins with obtaining a high school diploma or GED. A secondary education that includes a foundation in math, science, and communications is advisable. After obtaining a diploma or GED, the next step is to enroll in an approved program that awards a certificate or diploma in the area of sonogram technology. A typical curriculum will include further education in math and science in addition to workplace standards that all sonogram technicians must follow in the course of their employment. Students can expect to complete more hands-on courses to prepare them for the workplace as they near graduation.

Sonography Technician Licensing in Oregon

Oregon has recently changed its laws to require licensing for sonography technicians. By 2014, the majority of professionals in the field will be required to have obtained certification from an approved certifying body. The American Registry for Diagnostic Medial Sonography is a global organization that standardizes sonography by certifying applicants who successfully complete the organization's examination. Similar to the ARDMS, the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians is a national body that offers certification to those who successfully complete an exam that is administered by the organization. Applicants must show proof of graduation from an ARRT-approved institution in order to qualify to sit for the exam. Aspiring sonography technicians may also obtain certification through Cardiovascular Credentialing International, or CCI.

Career Outlook for Sonogram Technicians in Oregon

Sonogram technicians enjoy a favorable career outlook. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 44 percent increase in job openings from 2010 to 2020. This rate is significantly faster than the national average. The remarkable rate of growth is believed to be driven by a growing shift from invasive diagnostic procedures to sonography. Sonogram techs also earn competitive salaries with Oregon technicians averaging $86,000 each year despite a relatively lower cost of living in the state. Extremely competitive salaries and a multitude of job openings that are expected to be added in the future make sonography an excellent career field for adults of all ages who have an aptitude for math and science, enjoy working directly with people, and desire a career in a medical setting.
